Too Much Workout Strategy is a Bad Thing

You’ve heard of the KISS method right? Sure you have. “Keep it Simple Stupid”. You’ve probably heard that a million times, but have you ever applied it to your workouts? I’ll be the first one to tell you that I think that an overall workout strategy is important, but when do we get to the point where we begin to over-analyze our workouts? I know that I spent a lot of time blogging about all the different ways you could break down each of the 2014 Open Workouts. But do we ever come to the point where we’ve thought too much? Too we put to much emphasis on our CrossFit strategy?

This is more of a philosophical question that has an answer that varies from athlete to athlete. But if you really sit down and think about it, can you over analyze each individual workout that you do? My (smokin’ hot) wife, who is not a CrossFit-er, tells me “Just go after it and do it”, I laugh at her and say “It’s not that simple…”; but the more I think about it, the more I realize that she may be right after all.

Analysis Paralysis

“Analysis Paralysis” according to WikiPedia is the “…state of over-analyzing (or over-thinking) a situation so that a decision or action is never taken…”

Can we see something similar in our CrossFit workout strategy? Can we think so much that we can’t come up with a “proper” strategy so we psych ourselves out of a good performance before we even start?

If mental toughness is a key element of CrossFit, what happens when you get “off” on your strategy? You do 4 sets of 3 instead of 3 sets of 4…your mind starts wandering, you start doubting, and there can be negative effects because you aren’t 100% focused on what you’re doing. Negative effects include, missed reps, psyching yourself out, getting your head going to the point where you feel like you have to take a break even though you truly don’t, etc…

Listen to Nike, Just Do It

There is something to be said for pushing through, with your only strategy being “finish”. It’s how most of us started at CrossFit, before we were smart enough to understand that there was such a thing as a “Crossfit workout strategy”.

Recently I’ve been running outside, trying to build back up my cardio endurance (I hate running on a treadmill, so it goes downhill during winter months) and preparing for an upcoming GORUCK Challenge. I’ve started to hit that meta-physical “wall” of fatigue and rather than slowing down and stopping, I’ve tried INCREASING my running speed. Guess what? My body didn’t quit. It keep going and it asked for more when I was done.

That’s the thing, we aren’t even close to challenging the limits of the human body. What we’re doing is challenging the limits of the human mind. Your body can perform. The question is, can you?
